YouTube Data API key
Optionally add a YouTube Data API key so YouTube summaries include the video's title, channel, duration, and other details.
A YouTube Data API key is optional. It adds video details to YouTube summaries: the title, channel, description, duration, and view and like counts. You do not need it to summarize a video. Reduz always reads the transcript from the open watch page, with or without this key.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”An API key from a Google Cloud project with the YouTube Data API v3 enabled. This is a different key from your summarizing provider’s key, even if that provider is Google Gemini.
Turn it on
Section titled “Turn it on”- In the Google Cloud console, choose or create a project and enable the YouTube Data API v3.
- Create an API key under APIs & Services > Credentials. Restricting it to the YouTube Data API v3 is a good idea.
- In Reduz, open Settings and find YouTube Data API Key in the provider list.
- Paste the key and click Test.
What it changes
Section titled “What it changes”When you summarize a video, Reduz fetches the video’s details first. This works
from the popup, the side panel, and the summary panel on the YouTube page. The
YouTube title replaces the page title, and the rest goes into the summary
request. Custom prompts can use the details through the {metadata}
placeholder. See Customize your prompts.
If the request fails, Reduz still summarizes from the transcript, without the extra details. The YouTube page panel shows a “Video details unavailable” notice with Google’s error.
Where your data goes
Section titled “Where your data goes”Reduz sends the video id and your key directly from your browser to Google’s YouTube Data API. Reduz receives neither. The key stays in this browser, and exports never include it. Google counts each request against the project’s daily quota.
Turn it off
Section titled “Turn it off”Clear the key in Settings. Summaries you already saved stay in your local history.
