What to do when Anthropic rejects a request because a rate or usage limit was reached.
Symptom: Anthropic rejects a request because a rate or usage limit was reached.
Likely causes
Section titled “Likely causes”- Requests are arriving too quickly.
- The API account reached a spend or token limit.
Fix it in this order
Section titled “Fix it in this order”- Read the exact error. A rate limit and a spend limit look similar but clear differently.
- For a rate limit, check the Rate limits page, wait a moment, and retry.
- For a spend limit, open Billing. Retrying will not help until you raise your own limit or the monthly cap resets.
- Reduce content length or how often you summarize.

Keep your existing notes
Section titled “Keep your existing notes”A failed request does not remove local history. Your saved summaries stay in the browser until you clear them or uninstall the extension.
